There are multiple damage source in PoE, do you know? This PoE Damage Guide organized by Ourpoe details the common sources of damage and their characteristics, which can help new players understand path of exile more fully.
Attack
This type of skill is mainly affected by physical damage, elemental damage, critical strikes, hit, and attack speed above the weapon.
Attack has a hit, dodge, block
There are two sets of melee and Projectile
Spell
This type of skill is not affected by physical damage, elemental damage, critical strikes, hit, and attack speed above the weapon, but can be enhanced by weapon-added spells or global "affix" , such as: % increased Spell Damage, % increased Cast Speed, % increased Global Critical Strike Chance, etc...
Spell damage is not affected by the hit, dodge, and block. The spell is 100% hit in normal state. Only the specific Spell Avoid value will affect the spell hit rate. Only have the Spell Block value can block spells.
When a player is cursed by silence, they unable to cast spells
Melee
Melee skills are one of the attack skills
Only Attack skills with melee affixes can enjoy the effect of passive skill tree melee skill points
Only Attack skills with melee affixes can use support skill gems with melee affixes
Dual wielding
Dual wielding is a state of melee attack
The basic definition of dual holding is “player equips two one-handed weapons of any type”
10% more Attack Speed, 15% additional Block Chance and 20% more Attack Physical Damage while Dual Wielding
Some unique items will treat a one-handed weapon as Dual wielding, and of course you can enjoy the effect of Dual wielding
Bows
Bows skills must be held with a bow weapon to use
If the player wants to use the totem or trap to link the bow skills, the hand must also take the bow to use the skill.
Projectile
Attack and spell have projectiles both
Projectiles with different skills have different range
Increase the projectile speed can increase the range of the projectile
Minion
Minion can be affected by the auras
Neither passive skills nor stats from the player's equipment affect minions unless they specifically state "Minions _____".
Minion basically has the same IIQ and IIR dropped as the player.
Minion can help the player to charge the flask when killing the enemy.
Minion can collect charge
Totem
Totems allies are not considered to be minions
Totem will die after life returning to zero, but will not leave corpses
Skills used by totems are affected by the player's passive skills, equipment, and linked support gems. Totems use the player's own skills as though the player had cast them. Therefore, buffs and charges (except Endurance Charges) on the player will apply to totems. Totems themselves have a maximum Power Charge and Frenzy Charge limit of zero.
When using a totem to cast weapons-restricted skills, you must equip the corresponding weapon. For example, you must hold a bow to summon the totem of the bow skill.
The number and range of totems can be enhanced by passive tree and affixes on equipment.
Any reflected damage will be reflected onto the totem, not the player.
Traps and Mines
Traps and Mines are not considered to be minions
All traps and mines have a maximum Life of 1. They cannot be targeted directly by attacks or skills, but are vulnerable to Area of Effect damage. Since they have only 1 Life, they will be destroyed by any damage they take.
Trigger and Detonation radius can be increased by Trap Trigger Radius and Mine Detonation Radius modifiers. Laying speed can be increased by increased Cast Speed modifiers. Those modifiers can be found on passive skills and equipment.
By default a character can set up to 15 traps and 5 remote mines. There are several passive skills which increase these limits
Some traps store limited uses and replenish one use after a cooldown period.
Any reflected damage will be reflected onto traps and mines, not the player.
